There was a time and place when encountering the Vato Rat could've spelled trouble.
Finding it tagged on the decaying remnants of the piers of Pacific Ocean Park sometime before 1975 meant you were trespassing in the exclusive surfing territory of the gang from the Zephyr surf shop.  Surf at your own peril, it should've said.
From the airbrushed surfboards and spray-painted piers of POP to the skateboards of tomorrow, the Vato Rat became not just the core corporate image for Powell Peralta, but an international symbol for skateboarding.  Maybe Craig Stecyk has a singular talent for marketing the Hispanic gang iconography of his west LA neighborhood, or maybe it was just a brilliantly simple graphic image that echoes with the degenerate history of a dangerously aggressive band of surfing legends, in a wonderfully shabby era of LA beach culture.
Whatever it is, this classic board shape and design from 1980, evokes the golden eras of both surfing and skateboarding.
This is a very lightly used example totally rat-rodded out with lightly used, historic Stage 5 Independent 169mm trucks and new 60mm 90a Rat Bones Wheels with new REDS bearings.
